Composition

Composition — Revision Summary

Composition (≈ 20–25 marks) tests original writing. You usually choose ONE from several prompts. Aim for ~300–350 words unless told otherwise.

Types you may be asked

  • Descriptive — a person, place, scene or experience. Appeal to the five senses.
  • Narrative — tells a story; clear beginning → rising action → climax → end.
  • Argumentative / Discursive — "for and against" a statement; balanced paragraphs + your stand in the conclusion.
  • Reflective — thoughts around an abstract idea (e.g. Courage).
  • Picture composition — build a story/description suggested by the image.

Structure

  1. Introduction — hook + sets the scene/thesis.
  2. Body — 2–4 well-linked paragraphs, one idea each.
  3. Conclusion — rounds off; for argumentative, state your opinion.

Scoring tips

  • Plan for 3–4 minutes before writing.
  • Vary sentence length; use precise vocabulary and a few figures of speech.
  • Keep tense and person consistent. Proofread for grammar, spelling, punctuation.
  • Stay on the topic — examiners cut marks for irrelevance.
