Transformation = rewriting a sentence in a different form without changing its meaning. These are the high-frequency ICSE transformations.
1. Active ↔ Passive Voice
Rule: Object → subject; verb → be + past participle; subject → by + agent; tense stays the same.- The coach taught the rules. → The rules were taught by the coach.
- They are building a house. → A house is being built.
- Imperatives: Shut the door. → Let the door be shut.
2. Direct ↔ Indirect (Reported) Speech
Change pronouns, shift tense back one step, and change time/place words.- now→then, today→that day, tomorrow→the next day, yesterday→the previous day, here→there, this→that, come→go.
- Statement: She said, "I am tired." → She said that she was tired.
- Question: He said, "Where do you live?" → He asked where I lived.
- Command/request: He said, "Come early." → He told me to come early. (use told/ordered/requested + to + verb)
3. Degrees of Comparison (Positive / Comparative / Superlative)
- No other boy is as tall as Ram. (positive)
- Ram is taller than any other boy. (comparative)
- Ram is the tallest boy. (superlative)
4. Simple ↔ Compound ↔ Complex
- Simple: one clause. Compound: two main clauses (and/but/so/or). Complex: main + subordinate clause.
- Being ill, he stayed home. (simple) → He was ill, so he stayed home. (compound) → As he was ill, he stayed home. (complex)
5. Other Common Transformations
| Type | Example |
|---|---|
| Affirmative ↔ Negative | Everyone praised him. → There was no one who did not praise him. |
| Interrogative ↔ Assertive | Who does not love freedom? → Everyone loves freedom. |
| Exclamatory ↔ Assertive | How sweet the rose smells! → The rose smells very sweet. |
| too…to ↔ so…that | He is too weak to walk. → He is so weak that he cannot walk. |
| Begin with given word | The coach taught the rules. (Begin: The rules…) → The rules were taught by the coach. |
Quick tip: Read the instruction ("Begin with…", "Use…", "Change the voice") carefully — it tells you exactly which transformation is required. Keep the meaning identical; only the structure changes.
