ICSE Class 10 Physics — Chapter Weightage & High-Scoring Topics for 2027
Understanding the ICSE Physics Paper
The ICSE Physics paper is worth 80 marks (external) and lasts 2 hours. It typically has:
- Section A (40 marks): Compulsory short-answer questions covering the entire syllabus
- Section B (40 marks): Choose 4 out of 6 structured/long-answer questions
Chapter Weightage Analysis
Based on analysis of ICSE Physics papers from 2019–2024:
| Chapter | Average Marks | Frequency |
|---|---|---|
| Current Electricity | 14–16 | Every year (most tested) |
| Light (Refraction & Lenses) | 12–14 | Every year |
| Sound | 8–10 | Every year |
| Force, Work, Energy & Power | 10–12 | Every year |
| Heat & Calorimetry | 8–10 | Most years |
| Radioactivity & Nuclear Energy | 4–6 | Most years |
| Household Circuits | 4–6 | Alternating years |
High-Scoring Topics (Guaranteed Marks)
1. Current Electricity (Ohm's Law + Circuits)
This chapter alone can give you 14+ marks if mastered. Focus on:
- Series and parallel circuit numericals
- Kirchhoff's laws application
- Household electricity calculations (kWh, cost)
- Drawing circuit diagrams correctly
2. Refraction of Light
Lens formula numericals (1/v - 1/u = 1/f) appear every year. Master:
- Sign convention
- Magnification calculations
- Ray diagrams for convex and concave lenses
- Total internal reflection
3. Force & Energy
- Work-Energy theorem numericals
- Machines: MA, VR, efficiency calculations
- Principle of moments (turning effect)
Study Strategy by Priority
First 4 weeks: Current Electricity + Light (these two chapters = 30+ marks)
Next 3 weeks: Force/Work/Energy + Sound
Final 3 weeks: Heat + Radioactivity + revision of high-weightage topics
Exam Day Tips
- Attempt Section A first — it's compulsory and covers easier marks
- In Section B, read ALL questions before choosing — pick the 4 you're most confident about
- Draw diagrams with pencil and label everything
- Show units at every step in numericals
- For derivations, write each step clearly — marks are awarded per step
Practice Effectively
The key differentiator between 70% and 90%+ students is practice volume and quality. Take chapter-wise tests after studying each topic, review the marking scheme for every wrong answer, and simulate full papers in the final month.

Just confirmed this with my teacher — Electricity alone is worth 15+ marks almost every year. I'm spending the entire next 2 weeks just on series-parallel circuits and Ohm's law numericals.
Thank you for the priority order! I was wasting time on Radioactivity (4-6 marks) while barely touching Refraction (12-14 marks). This weightage table is going on my wall.
One thing I'd add: diagrams in Physics carry separate marks. My teacher said even if your numerical is wrong, a correct ray diagram or circuit diagram gets you 1-2 marks. Always draw them.
The 'Start with Electricity + Light' advice is spot on. Those two chapters together = 30 marks. Master those and you've already secured a good score before touching anything else.
